FAQs

Is global shipping really free? What about import duties & taxes?

For a limited time, shipping globally is actually free and we cover all import duties and taxes.

With certain countries, you will pay import taxes first, and we will reimburse you.

What if I don't like the product? Are returns free?

We are so confident you'll love the Basis Trainer that we offer free returns within 45 days of order. 100% Satisfaction money back guarantee. There's absolutely zero risk to try the product.

How do these compare to elastic bands?

Elastic bands don't properly simulate the paddle stroke give you enough resistance during the catch and pull phases of the stroke, too much resistance during the exit phase, and will jerk your arm forward so you can't properly train the all important recovery phase. The resistance also isn't adjustable, and they will train bad technique.

The Basis trainer solves all of these problems.

Why is training the recovery stroke so important?

The recovery stroke is crucial because it utilizes tiny rotator cuff muscles and is the part of the stroke that fatigues surfers arms the most. Not training it means that you won't be able to paddle for long durations. The Basis trainer is the only compact trainer that allows you to do that.

The recovery stroke returns your hand from the end of the stroke back to the beginning of the stroke and heavily taxes your rear deltoids, rotator cuffs, and traps. These muscles are amongst the first to fatigue during a long paddle session because they are small and not heavily utilized. That burning in your shoulders during long sessions is actually because of the recovery stroke.

Is it one arm resisting the other? What creates the resistance?

No, the Basis trainer applies resistance to the rope as it passes back and forth through the unit.

Will it damage my door? Can I use it with any door?

No, it will not damage your door - the anchor is soft non-marking rubber. Works with any door and installs in seconds.

Can I use it without a door?

You can tie the rope anchor to anything like a pole, tree, or fence.

What does concentric mean?

The Basis trainer is concentric-only so it provides resistance during the catch/pull/push/exit phases of the stroke, but no resistance during the recovery stroke to allow you to return your arm back to its starting position without jerking it forward.

What kind of exercises can you do with the Basis?

Besides paddling, the types of exercises that are possible are limited only by your imagination, but here is a list of some important ones: lat pulldown, chest pulldown, chest press, shoulder press, shoulder front raise, shoulder side raise, bicep curl, tricep pushdown, squat, and deadlift.

Is the unit durable? Is the rope replaceable?

The Basis trainer is very durable and will last you many years. The rope should also last several years, but you can easily replace it.

Do you need to use a bench? I don't have space.

No, you can use it simply use it with a bozu ball, standing up, kneeling on a pillow, and laying down.

Can the trainer be brought as carry-on luggage?

Some airports — particularly in the U.S. — can be stricter and may require you to check it, while others are more lenient.

We recommend arriving early just in case you need to check it unexpectedly.

What does the $299 price include?

The $299 covers the Paddle Trainer System. As a complimentary bonus, you’ll also receive 3 months of free access to our community and courses.

How does the community and course access work?

The first 3 months are completely free.  After that, you can continue access for $20/month billed monthly. You will not be automatically charged.

What kind of support is included in the community?

Inside the community, you’ll have access to:

  • Courses on paddle technique, paddle training, and shoulder pain
  • Weekly Q&A calls on paddling and all things surfing
  • Surf technique Q&A calls with guest surf coaches from the podcast
  • Q&A calls with guest physical therapists to help you with any pain or mobility issues

Are the courses and community helpful if I’m already an experienced surfer?

Yes! Many lifelong surfers—including former competitive swimmers and Ironman athletes—initially thought they didn’t need the community. But they experienced major breakthroughs in paddling technique, power, and efficiency after joining.

What happens after the free 3 months?

If you find value in the coaching and resources, you can continue access for $20 a month. You will not be automatically charged.

FAQs

When are the weekly coaching calls?

Calls run every week on Wednesdays at 2:45pm Eastern US Time. Every call is recorded, so if you miss one live you can watch the replay and submit your footage and questions ahead of time.

How does the video analysis work?

Film your pop up on your phone and submit it inside the course platform. Your footage gets broken down on the weekly call, so you see what your body is actually doing versus what you think it's doing. Submit as many times as you want during your 3 months while we dial in your technique.

What skill level is this for?

If you can catch waves but your pop up is slow, late, or inconsistent, this program was built for you. Everything is broken down step by step, so newer surfers can follow along and experienced surfers can find the details holding them back.

Do I need any equipment?

No. The training is designed for dryland, so you can build your technique at home between surfs.

What if I can't get in the water much during the 90 days?

That's fine. The program is built around dryland training, and the guarantee checklist measures your pop up mechanics, not your wave count. Time in the water helps, but progress doesn't depend on it.

When do I get access?

Immediately after purchase. You can start the first module and film your day 1 pop up the same day.

What happens after 3 months?

You choose. Keep access to the course and coaching for $20 a month, or walk away with your improved pop up. Nothing renews automatically.

How does the guarantee work?

Film your pop up on day 1 and submit it. Complete the modules and keep submitting footage as you practice. If your pop up hasn't improved on at least 5 of the 8 points on our checklist by day 90, you choose: a full refund, or we keep coaching you free until it has.
