Surf Tips from Pierre Maré, Alister Cran, Micah Margieson and Magnum Martinez

This December was full of tips on how to quadruple your wave count, insights into preventing surf related injuries, how to come back from them, discussions on finding flow and how to surf smarter. Here’s a quick recap of our podcasts this month:

Check out the podcast video below along with some of our favorite tips from our guest.

“It is a big effort that you need to put in to catch the wave. And then you're using the same muscle groups to pop up. It's really, really hard. If you don't have that foundational paddle strength in place, you're much more likely to blow the wave or you won't have the mental clarity to take in everything around you to make the wave.”

“It's exactly like paddling. After I saw the improvements after a month, I thought, wow, I can probably do two sessions in a day. I can probably do three sessions in a day if I put my mind to this and be consistent.”

- Pierre Maré

“If I'm seeing 30 to 40 people a week, I'd have about 40% of those would be knees. And of that 40% I would say a very large percentage of that is medial knee issues. So MCL, meniscus, medial meniscus, MCL and things that accompany that like your ACL sprains and tears.”

“If they're looking for the most time effective thing that's going to give them the most bang for their buck, then lifting heavy through your functional range of motion with functional exercises is by far in a way better than 99% of the other stuff you do.”

- Alister Cran

“I think that's where it's like surfing, it's that medicine, that happy drug for people. It's kind of like a wave. You're happy, you have this good wave and it'll give you dopamine for maybe a few months and then you'll forget about it and you go, I need another one.”

“About four or five months ago, I got one of those Golden Child boards, and I put it under my arm and I was just like, oh, this is the shortboard that I wish I had my whole surfing career”

- Micah Margieson

“If you want to turn, you have to be on the tail. If you want to trim, you want to generate a lot of speed, then certain boards allow you to be in the center of the board or farther up even towards the nose, and you can still get a lot of drive forward, which is super fun, but then all comes back to like, you want to turn tight, move back.”

“I feel every single injury, it's a sign from the universe for you to slow down and to rethink, regroup and kind of get a fresh perspective on life itself.”

- Magnum Martinez
