Why Surfing Doesn’t Need to be Perfect
Surfing Isn’t Perfect, That’s the Point
There’s a common idea that surfing needs to look a certain way. You need smooth lines, big turns, and clean landings. This skewed perspective comes from watching pros or seeing polished clips online, and aspiring to improve our skills. Even though that can be helpful and inspiring, it can also be detrimental. Chasing perfect waves, perfect technique, and perfect style all the time can actually hold us back. This is because surfing isn’t perfect, and it’s not supposed to be.

Why We Have to Play
In a recent podcast with Adam Knox, we talked about how important it is to play. To try new things and to surf without the pressure of doing it "right." Playing is where growth happens, not in copying someone else’s style perfectly, but in finding your own through trial and error.
If you skip this step, you miss the part of surfing that actually makes you better. You skip the evolution of experimenting, failing, and then learning and improving.
Falling Is Part of It
A lot of people don’t want to look like beginners. They’re scared to fall or look like they don’t know what they’re doing. But the truth is: If you’re not falling, you’re probably not learning anything, and no one else is even really watching.
The ironic thing that we often forget is that pros fall more than anyone else. You just don’t see that part on Instagram. Behind every clean clip is hours of eating it - but that’s how they got good.
The Danger of Chasing Perfection
If you’re always chasing clean, perfect surfing, you end up doing the same turns on the same boards in the same kinds of waves. That might feel safe, and it might feel good for a while, but it also limits your progression. In surfing, and pretty much everything else in life you grow by exploring what’s possible and learning from being imperfect.
Unlocking Your Own Style
When you stop trying to look like someone else, your own style starts to shine through. That’s the goal of surfing and enjoying it too. It’s not to copy, but to discover what feels natural to you. That only happens through trying things that feel awkward, surfing new waves, and experimenting with boards that move differently. The more you explore, the more you find your own unique rhythm.
Surfing Is What You Make It
Surfing doesn’t come in one form and it doesn’t have to be clean, stylish, or “right.” The sooner you drop the idea that surfing has to look a certain way, the sooner you can start improving and enjoying it more.
Remember: Surfing isn’t perfect, and that’s exactly what makes it so fun!
