How Tail Shapes Change the Way Your Board Feels

Understanding Surfboard Tail Shapes

If you look at enough surfboards, you start to notice one thing: the tail shape changes a lot. This aspect of surfboard design plays a big role in how your board feels under your feet and how it performs in different kinds of waves.

At a basic level, tail design follows the same logic as volume and dimensions. Wider, bulkier tails give you more lift and speed, whilst narrower tails sit deeper and lower in the water, giving you more control and hold in the wave. Let’s break down the most common tail shapes:

Squash Tail

The squash tail is one of the most common designs. It’s wide, with a flat or slightly curved edge across the back and fairly sharp corners.

  • Wide surface area gives lift and speed, which is great for weak or smaller waves
  • Corners allow water to easily release off the back, allowing for quick, sharp, pivoty turns
  • Feels responsive and easy to control

You’ll often see squash tails on grovellers, everyday shortboards, and longboards. It’s a very user-friendly shape.

Round Tail

The round tail smooths things out with a continuous curve instead of corners, like with the squash tail. This means:

  • More hold than a squash tail

  • Turns feel longer and more drawn out as you’re connected at all angles to the wave

This shape generally works well in waves with a bit more power and hollower shape. You’ll often see it on all-rounder shortboards, midlengths, and step-ups.

Pin Tail

The pin tail is more narrow than a round tail, and comes to a point. This provides:

  • Maximum hold and control since it sits deeper in the wave face
  • Best for bigger waves that are steep, fast, powerful, or barreling

This tail shape is useful when you need to control speed, not create it, and is often seen in step-ups and guns for big wave surfing. The downside of its tight hold however, is reduced maneuverability - it’s generally harder to turn quickly with a pin tail surfboard.

Swallow Tail

The swallow tail shape has two pintails with a cutout in the middle. This wide base offers:

  • Speed and lift with the two pins, adding extra hold
  • So it balances speed and control well

This shape is common on fish boards, often paired with twin fins. A twin fin set up can feel loose, and so the swallow tail helps balance that by adding some grip back into the wave.

Key Tail Shape Principles

Nowadays, there are so many different tail shapes. There are combinations of these ones above, asymmetrical shapes, and ones that are completely unique. Understanding the basic principles of tail shape design is essential to navigating these surfboard innovations.

So when it comes to width

  • Wider tails = more lift and speed, and are usually better for smaller or weaker waves
  • Narrower tails = more hold and control, and are generally better for bigger or more powerful surf

When it comes to corners and outlines:

  • Sharp corners = more responsive, quick, and turns that pivot well
  • Round outlines = smoother, more connected feel, and long drawn out carves and turns

Why It Matters

Understanding tail shapes gives you a better sense of why your board feels the way it does. Knowing this can help you make better decisions when it comes to choosing the best board for the waves you’re going to ride, and for the type of surfing you want to do.

When you try different boards and different tail shapes, pay attention to what changes:

  • How easy is it to turn?
  • Do you feel like you’re sliding or holding?
  • Are you generating speed, or trying to slow things down?

Experimenting with different tail shapes, along with other aspects of board design, helps you build awareness. Over time, this is what leads to better flow, better timing, more control, and more fun in your surfing.
