The key to small wave surfing
Why Paddle Power Matters
According to Kevin, catching waves in small surf comes down to how much momentum you can create while paddling:
“Your momentum that you generate from a paddle into a small wave is going to either start or end your wave very quickly. Momentum and speed when paddling into waves like that is a huge factor.”
Unlike larger waves that offer more natural push, small waves require you to create your own speed. The best surfers paddle with energy and intent, using every stroke to build as much momentum as possible. Kevin points out:
“You see the best guys in the world... when they’re successful, they look like they’re energetically paddling into waves and creating that momentum.”
What You Can Do:
- Train with the Basis Paddle Trainer: build paddle power for small waves with interval sprint reps and long endurance so you can handle long sessions. Check it out at www.surfbasis.com
- Commit to Your Paddle: Don’t hesitate or slow down—paddle aggressively and stay focused on creating forward momentum
- Practice Often: Put yourself in small-wave conditions regularly and practice these skills
- Pick the right board: Make sure you ride something that suits the conditions - low rocker and more volume are your friends.
Struggle with paddle power? I've gone months without surfing and rolled up to pumping swell and surfed 3 hr sessions, multiple times a day, day after day after day, by using the Basis Paddle Trainer. Train anytime, anywhere, so you can catch more waves and have more fun. Check it out at www.surfbasis.com
