What a month it’s been this October at the Basis Surf Podcast! I was stoked to learn from some of the best surf coaches in the world and get an inside scoop on how the pros train. These episodes are packed with gems, so if you’re looking to improve your surfing, technique, and training, you won’t want to miss this month’s lineup!

Here’s your quick recap of everything that went down this October:

Check out the podcast videos below along with some of our favorite tips from each episode.

"So with foundation training, for example, like Billy Kemper coming off an injury, there's going to be atrophy on one side and doing foundation training really helps you recruit all those muscles because you’re making a whole kinetic chain connection so that you can just feel better and get things balanced out.

It’s a game changer to the point where it’s not just Billy. A lot of the guys in WSL are doing it. Jordy does it, Griffin, Jack Robinson. It helps you counter all that rotation that you’re doing surfing and it helps not just surfers, everybody, every human’s got imbalances right?”

The way you're going to perform the best is when you enter that flow state. It's connecting with your board, it's connecting with your body, connecting with the wave and everything that is happening around.

To tap into that and to get into this flow state, you have to trust and to trust is not about positive words and positive things. It's about training and knowing that you are prepared. So when the wave comes, there's a conversation that happens in between your brain, your body and everything and it's like your brain is going to ask, okay, are we ready to go on this one? If you’re ready and it’s yes, everything’s going to flow. If the answer is no, then it’s when you’re going to doubt, you’re going to freak out, then bad things happen.

That’s why you train a lot of things before a contest, because you’re working on all the details so that when you are in front of that wave and you ask that question, you’re like, yes, I’m ready, let’s go.”

“You always know that there's a couple popups where you're just a little bit slow to your feet, especially if it's a fast drop. You just can't manage to get your feet underneath you or just feet too quick. And after I lost that 30 pounds, I mean it just felt that much more solid, that much more confident in nailing the popup. Just think about going into a gym, pick up a 30 pound dumbbell, that thing is freaking heavy. Now take that dumbbell, imagine it was like a fanny pack, okay, put it on your waist and then, imagine how much harder it's to do a pop-up, right? So when you take it off, that's when I noticed it.”
