Surf Tips from Tom Carroll & Marcus Hamil, Mateus Herdy, Ridge Lenny and iSurfMex

This March, we shared tips from top surfers and coaches to help you refine your technique and approach in the water – like how to read waves, prepare your body, and train your paddling. Stay tuned as the Basis Paddle Trainer is almost here, designed to keep your paddling strong, even when you’ve been out of the water for a long time.

Here’s a quick recap of the podcasts this March:

Check out the podcast videos below along with some of our favorite tips from each episode.

“Surfing demands attention. That feeling of getting caught inside for a solid set was like, oh, we've got to be on, the body's got to be on, the mind has to have that experience of knowing itself in the pounding.”

“The paddle trainer, I think it's similar to what we're doing that creates the ability to replicate that training because it's easy for Tom and I. We're like a minute from the beach, but a lot of people are not. That was definitely the intention – to allow people to prepare on dry land, just like your breath work and your meditation allow you to train your mind on dry land, so you're going to perform in the water. ”

- Tom Carroll & Marcus Hamill

“When you bottom turn, before you get to the top of the wave, twist your body and then you look right to the whitewater way before you get to the top of the wave. Keep your arms strong. As you start looking towards the whitewater, it's almost like the board is going to do it for you. You just keep holding the rail and then go all the way to the end.”

- Mateus Herdy

“Figure out how to stay really low through the bottom turn, just bending with my knees and keeping my back more in an upright posture. The last thing you want to do is hinge at the hips. If your waist is hinged and your legs are pretty extended, you're missing out on a crazy amount of power.”

- Ridge Lenny

“Tides, they can work against you or with you depending on the size of the swell and the angle of the swell is pretty important too…. So having an eye on the beaches is very important to really score. Or if you're not connected enough and you have your trip settled only on what Surfline is saying or what the forecasts are saying, most likely you're going to get a little bit skunked during the year.

“Here it's not like you have to paddle super strong for five minutes. No, you have to paddle for 30 minutes and negotiate the current and negotiate the sets that are coming in. You have to be fit to make it happen for you.”

- iSurfMex
