Surf Advice from Taylor Jensen, Lucas Hildreth, and Adam Sime

This month's podcast conversations explored the relationship between dedicated training, smart preparation, and the pure joy of getting the most out of every wave. Adam Sime, a busy father of three and nurse from East Sussex, shared how the Basis Paddle Trainer transformed his surf trips, going from burning out within an hour to surfing four-hour sessions limited only by the cold, and quadrupling his wave count in the process. Lucas Hildreth, an ER resident and aspiring big wave surfer from New York, talked about balancing gruelling 80-hour work weeks with a passion for adventure surfing in places like Iceland, Portugal, and Mavericks, and how intentional paddle training became his secret weapon for making every hard-earned day off count. Four-time World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen rounded out the month with a masterclass on the power of fundamentals. From cross-stepping on dry land to riding diverse equipment, and how patience has kept him at the top of his game. Here's a quick recap of our podcasts this month.

Check out the podcast video below along with some of our favorite tips from our guest.

“I think coming off of shorter boards, you can manhandle it and force those turns. You can extend a bit quicker and get a bit snappier with it. With a mid-length or a long board, you don't have that ability. So you really have to sit on that rail and let the board come around and be patient and wait for it.”

“Elite athletes in any sport, they all continue doing the fundamentals regardless of where they're at because it's such a key aspect in your sport. We have so much time on land as opposed to in the ocean and so much more opportunity for repetition.”

- Taylor Jensen

“The first thing is look towards the beach, you want to do a quick bottom turn and you want to be like, back foot all the way back on your board, and then look towards the lip out of the corner of your eye. And then after that, you want to throw your arms kind of doing a 180 with your body and your shoulders.”

“So I would actually just go a little not all out, just below all out, and I think that actually helped me use the wave.”

- Lucas Hildreth

“100%. If you put the work in, you'll get the results. I'm constantly surf fit now.”

“It almost feels like cheating because it's removed the anxiety that I had previously about going on trips and being burnt out before you even get into it.”

- Adam Sime
